In preparation for tracking, I set up my blank Cubase project, planning out my vocal/backing vocals with respective doubles, the guitars (both clean and distorted), bass, synth lines and drum kit layout (in terms of microphones). Below is a screenshot of this project:
I set this up by going to File -> New Project, within the drop down menu, then added my mono audio tracks by going to Project -> Add Track -> Audio.
Here I could then set how many I required, in this case 18.
In terms of tracking each part, I would have to alter my process depending on the instrument:
- Vocals and instruments that are to be mic'ed up (electric guitar, bass guitar and drums) will be ran from the microphones, into the XLR inputs of the mixing board (Onyx Firewire 1640i) and through to Cubase (my digital audio workstation)
- In contrast, the synth will be recorded using a direct input (DI) - this means the left and right outputs will be connected from the keyboard straight into the back of the mixing desk. Any other overdubs will be recorded onto a single stereo track instead of having separate left/right tracks
